Dynamic symbols are found throughout musical scores, and they tell us at what volume we should be performing our music. The volume, or dynamic level, constantly changes throughout any given piece of music, and we should always watch for new dynamic markings as we read our scores.

pianissimo = very soft; very quiet

 

piano = soft; quiet

 

mezzo piano = medium soft; somewhat quiet

 

mezzo forte = medium loud; somewhat loud

 

forte = loud

 

fortissimo = very loud

 

sfortzato = loudly accented

 

 

crescendo = gradually get louder

abreviated "cresc."

 

 

decrescendo or diminuendo = gradually get softer

abreviated "decr." or "dim."
