The staff is made up of five lines and four spaces. Each line and each space is named after a different letter of the music alphabet (A B C D E F G). Think of the staff as being like a ladder. As we step from the bottom up (from line to space), we go up one letter in the music alphabet with each step. Once we reach the last letter of the music alphabet, we start over with A. Because we only have seven letters in our music alphabet, each letter will be reused many times.

Always remember that the lowest line on the Treble cleff staff (E) is different than the lowest line on the bass cleff staff (G).

Ledger Lines

Each staff only has enough room for nine different pitches. If we want to go higher than the highest letter on the Treble Clef staff, we can do so by extending the staff with ledger lines. Ledger lines are extra lines drawn in to go above the top line or below the bottom line.

*Since we are going down the staff, we have to go backwards in our music alphabet.
